Home Cures for Yeast Infections

Through out the ages, women have searched for reliable home cures for yeast infections. They’re looking to cure “the itch you can’t scratch” once and for all. Although modern science relies on drugs and antibiotics to help, sometimes that just makes it worse. There are many options for the modern woman who likes to handle her own health care that can come right from her own kitchen.

Yeast infections are caused by an imbalance of normal bacterial flora in the vaginal canal. This can lead to an over abundance of a bacteria called Candida albicans. That’s what causes the burning, discharge and that unbearable itch.

Home Cures you can try on your own

  • Garlic is not only good for your heart, but also contains antifungal properties. Chop it into your salad or sauces, at least 2 cloves daily to optimum effect.
  • Olive leaf extract with grapefruit seed extraction in a glass of water is another good curative tonic. Concentrations vary according to taste.
  • Add cranberry juice to your lunch to increase the acidity of vaginal secretions, but use unsweetened. Sweetened juice adds sugar to the secretions and yeast thrives on sugar.

Yougurt as Yeast Infection Remedy

Yogurt is your friend. Consuming one serving of plain yogurt daily at the first signs of infection can help rebalance the pH of the vagina and decrease symptoms. 1 or 2 tablespoons inserted into the vagina has also been reported to provide relief. It can also be applied externally, as needed. A mild douche solution can be made with yogurt as well. There are also yogurt tablets at your local health food or drug store that can be taken as per the package instructions.

Make a cup of tea, thyme tea to be precise. Use 1 teaspoon of thyme per 1 cup of boiling water and drink daily until symptoms are relieved. This can be repeated up to 4 times per day.

Also from the spice rack, rosemary has been proven effective. Again, begin by preparing a tea and then use it as an external application or as a douche. Avoid over douching, as this can lead to more bacterial infection and disrupt the floral balance of the vaginal canal further.

American Indians are fond of using buttermilk in their diets, whether currently infected or not. Like yogurt, it seems to have protective qualities that prevent recurrent infections.
